Bet St George and BresBet Have Licences Suspended Over Suspected Compliance Failings

The operating licences of Bet St George and BresBet have been suspended by the UK Gambling Commission – meaning that both sites are temporarily unavailable.

The regulator is now conducting a full investigation and review of the two brands, with the possibility that there has been a considerable breach of social responsibility and anti-money laundering standards.

A licence suspension is usually the last resort action taken by the Gambling Commission, so it will be interesting to see what the future holds for these two casino-sports betting hybrids.

Licence Suspension

A visit to either site reveals essentially the same message. ‘The operating licence 67818 has been suspended by the Gambling Commission with effect from 28 August 2026.

‘If you have any questions, or wish to make an enquiry about your account or funds, you can contact us at support@betstgeorge.com.’

The regulator has warned both brands to treat their customers fairly during the hiatus by providing regular updates – unless contacting customer support directly, they will not be able to access their account or make a withdrawal.

A statement from the UKGC reads:

Both of the sites are operated from the same Sheffield HQ by the Brereton family, with Nicholas and Rebecca Brereton named as the main directors. Playbook Engineering provides the software and back-office technology upon which they are run.

BresBet was launched in 2021, with Nic Brereton – a professional punter and racehorse owner – acting as the founder and main shareholder.

Bet St George, meanwhile, was established by the Breretons in 2025 and launched the following March in time for the Cheltenham Festival, confirming their specialism in horse racing betting.

A licence suspension is one of the more serious punitive actions that the Gambling Commission has at its disposal.

These sanctions range on a sliding scale from a formal warning right through to licence revocation, with powers under section 117 of the Gambling Act 2005 to also add conditions to an operating licence and/or issue a financial penalty.

Fines are the typical punishment dished out by the regulator, with the likes of Evolution – who reportedly only just escaped a licence suspension of their own, Betfred and QuinnBet all issued with financial settlements since June alone.

However, a licence suspension is rare and typically reserved for only the most significant of breaches. Spribe, a developer of Crash games, had their licence suspended in October 2025 over what the regulator described as ‘serious non-compliance’.

It took nearly six months for the Gambling Commission to complete their investigation and ultimately lift the suspension in March 2026.
